APRIL BREAKDOWN: BONUS POST
April was a heavy month where I surpassed the first 100 films and kept going for a few more. This was also my favorite month for movies, so it’s going to be hard to pick favorites later.
General Breakdown
After just scooting by last month, I burned through 35 films surpassing my 25 goal. This is good news because I will be backpacking for about 10 days this month, meaning I won’t have really any access to any TV or medium to help me watch a movie (I could watch on my phone, but I’m not gonna waste any precious power on my phone). 110 films so far this year is a lot, and no small feat.
31 of these films were brand new, 2 were films I hadn’t seen in at least 10 years, and 2 were rewatched. Those totals are now 91, 10, and 10, meaning I am nearly half way to my 200 new films benchmark.
Genre Breakdown
The genre breakdown of those 35 films are:
Drama - 13 (32)
Based On A True Story (BOATS) - 1 (9)

Action - 2 (14)
Thriller - 7 (15)
Fantasy - 3 (8)
Sci-Fi - 2 (7)
Horror - 5 (7)
Documentary - 0 (3)
The numbers in parentheses are the total for the year.
Decade Breakdown
The decade breakdown of those 35 films are:
1930s - 0 (1)
1940s - 2 (3)
1950s - 1 (3)
1960s - 1 (6)
1970s - 4 (7)
1980s - 7 (23)
1990s - 6 (16)
2000s - 2 (8)
2010s - 5 (10)
2020s - 7 (33)
The numbers in parentheses are the total for the year.
Favorite New Film
So this category is hard because the majority of my films this month were new, and a lot of them were great. There was Sorcerer to kick off the month followed by Oslo, August 31st shortly after. La haine and The Red Shoes were homework that completely and utterly captured me, which I was not expecting. Auteurs like Guillermo del Toro and Garland wowed me with Crimson Peak and Civil War. And of course, there was some amazing animation in Ghost in the Shell and WolfWalkers. But At the end of the day, I think I’m going to have to go with Challengers. This might be recency bias, and I still liked Civil War more as of now, but Challengers was pretty damn great.
Favorite Rewatch
there isn’t much to choose from but all three of the four were really fun to watch again. My heart says Ex Machina, but my inner-teenager will make me pick Scott Pilgrim.
Surprise Film
Okay, so, I want to go La haine, but because The Red Shoes is older and still so gripping and captivating nearly 80 years later, I can’t not pick The Red Shoes.
This upcoming month will probably be a little slower, but guess why…
