So there seems to be this thing with the few Cassavetes films I have seen now. There is action happening and we’re just supposed to understand what is going on. I don’t know how to explain it, but the barebones-ness of his films just adds to this dry feeling you get when you watch them. Where we are supposed to just automatically know this world we’re thrust into and know everyone involved and their relations to each other with no explanation at all. And people love this. They laud it for true, visceral, guerilla filmmaking that rallied against the studio system. But at the same time, stylistically, these films feel like they could have more juice to them if they were just shot differently? I think that’s been the hardest thing, is that these can be more affecting and personal films if they didn’t look the way they did. And sure, I get budget and everything tied to the Cassavetes lore of movie making, but to me they just feel flat.
