John Carpenter is an absolute all-timer, I think that goes without question. But sometimes you watch something, and you just think to yourself, “What the actual fuck did I just watch?” Now, sometimes that is a bad thing, where you get an absolute shit movie that was a waste of your time. Sometimes though, it can be a very good thing but you’re still just as confused as hell. Saltburn is a movie that falls into this category, where you watch it and go, “What the actual fuck.” You enjoyed it thoroughly, but don’t know why you did. Bring in Big Trouble in Little China.
This is something that has been on my list for a while that I just have not gotten around to. Luckily, it was finally accessible1 and I dove in not knowing anything. What a treat. The story is absolutely incoherent because you’re just thrown into it. The set design is absolutely sick and brings you into this fantasy world. The subversion of Kurt Russell doing a moronic white-guy, John Wayne impersonation who, while being the protagonist, actually doesn’t accomplish anything while the “sidekick” does. The practical effects are incredible, which is always a plus. This film is just an idiotic ride for the best with so many loose ends of monsters and mythology that appear for no reason. And that ride is absolutely worth it.
Via Tubi, which I’m starting to be convinced might be the best streaming app.
